Second Annual Silver Terrace Harvest Festival 10.17.09

2009 Harvest Festival

Over 75 people, including children, parents and grandparents, came out to Silver Terrace on October 17th 2009 to attend the Second Annual Harvest Festival. Hosted by the Friends of Silver Terrace, the event provided lunch and snacks for families, arts and crafts activities for children, and an opportunity for neighbors to meet one another and enjoy the park on a sunny Saturday.

Building off the success of last year's Harvest Festival, as well as other improvement projects in the park, the Friends of Silver Terrace successfully planned and executed this year's Harvest Festival. The group will meet soon to discuss their plans for 2010, which will undoubtedly include more community events and a focus on keeping the park safe and clean for all to enjoy. Silver Terrace Community Meeting 6.16.09

Silver Terrace

On Tuesday, June 16th, the Friends of Silver Terrace hosted a community meeting to discuss park issues and recruit interested community members to their group. Still an emerging group, they have worked on a few projects at the park including the most recent garden project at the clubhouse entrance. Attendees of the meeting discussed strategies for recruiting more people to the group as well as immediate concerns that should be addressed at the park. For meeting minutes, please click here .

Silver Terrace Garden Project, Round Two: 5.27.09

 Silver Terrace Garden Project

Weeds cleared, sleeves rolled up, and the sun shining, parents and grandparents of the Silver Terrace neighborhood prepared to plant some new life into a small garden plot at the Waterville Street entrance to Silver Terrace Park. Having completed the major work of removing a nasty old stump from the plot last month, volunteers now took on the much more enjoyable (and less back-breaking) work of planting beautiful flowers and plants. Splashes of yellow, maroon, purple and white soon adorned the once weed-ridden area.

Participants of the garden project got a chance to reconnect with their environment through the simple act of planting a flower. Some learned lessons that they'll apply to their own gardens at home. Others enjoyed having the time to experience something new with their children or grandchildren. Everyone got to know each other and enjoy the warm weather. Next month, the families will come back to create signs that will encourage other neighbors to care for the new flowerbed and hopefully deter vandals who would potentially steal flowers. The group hopes that through their efforts, they can grow community as well as flowers. Click here to see photos from the day's work.

Silver Terrace Earth Day Garden Project 4.22.09

Over 15 volunteers, including little helpers, came out to Silver Terrace on April 22nd (Earth Day) 2009 to help prepare what will soon be a new plant and flower garden. Two parent groups, both from Portola Family Connections rolled up their sleeves and dug their hands into the earth. Despite a stubborn stump, and some tough weeds, they managed to clear the entire area in less than 2 hours. It was just a coincidence that the group came out on Earth Day, but what better way to celebrate the day than to literally dig in and make some improvements?

The group plans to come back next month to plant, and make a few finishing touches to the site. Come by Silver Terrace Park on Bayshore and Silver this summer to check out their work! In the meantime, check out photos from the day here .

Silver Terrace Workday 2.7.09

Silver Terrace Workday

On February 7th, at Silver Terrace Park, students and athletes from the Paul Revere Middle School as well as participants in a Rec and Park soccer league helped clean up the playing field. Neighbors also spontaneously joined in. Rakes in hand, attendees of the workday learned the importance of maintaining the assets that they so frequently enjoy.
