Workshop 1
A. People
We need green clean safe areas for passive and active recreation.
We need clubhouse and playground improvements.
We need a separate area set-aside for dog activities as per the dog
policy.
Make positive use of leisure time- clean, pristine parks- therefore
increased maintenance staff.
Programmed activities for children, teens and families.
Responsible use of natural areas.
Focused activities in arts and sciences.
Key words: people- use- rec. facilities- full family friendly- play
areas- multi purpose- gardens- family parks.
Community facilities- playgrounds, kids play areas, picnic areas-
outdoor spaces extension of home, plazas- gathering places, beauty areas-
gardens, learning (natural areas).
Park users should respect others who may wish to use the park, by
observing the law and rules as specified by Rec. and Park Dept.
Facilities and opportunities for both recreation and life long learning
for all ages.
Better balance of plants, people and dogs.
Parks need to be open to all that want to use them, without specific
restrictions. There are many needs for all age groups- opportunities
to walk, sit, and read; children playground facilities; sporting areas
where duplication is not a consideration.
Glen Park is big enough for some sort of Dog Park, it is a hugely
used park by dog owners, myself included, and a WELL thought out Dog
Park would serve a large part of the community.
Dog play/off leash areas.
Community gardens.
Health programs- tai chi etc..
Multiple use, care and preservation of natural areas, educational
programs in art, science and the environment.
Indoor and outdoor programs for individuals and families- separate
areas for dogs, safe areas, community gardens, hiking trails, bird watching
areas off limit to dogs (on or off leash).
Enforce leash and poop laws.
More places for intergenerational activities (like Randall museum).
B. Land
Family and program perspective- glen park master plan : passive and
active rec.
A balanced mix of protected natural areas including wildlife habitat
facilities for arts and sciences; recreation and sports facilities and
dog off leash areas.
Restored wetlands.
Parks with facilities that are family oriented- playgrounds, natural
areas for passive recreation + undeveloped, people oriented spaces-
easily accessible, safe enough for kids to go to alone.
Ensure that areas are always available for passive as well as active
recreation.
Native areas- corona heights.
Maintenance of trails with lights.
Enlarge and improve State St. playground.
There is a need for irrigation improvements in Christopher and Noe
courts. Much time and money is spent in growing grass without consideration
in how it is watered and maintained.
Toilets are not working at Noe courts.
I strongly feel that "natural area restoration" enthusiasts
should not be given carte blanche especially in Glen Park and should
infact be closely monitored. I would like to see the hiking trails closed
tot he public- I would like to see them maintained as public trails-
cleared of overgrowth, poison oak, et on a regular basis.
Natural areas have overloaded themselves and are stretched in their
pursuits, thus resulting in poor maintenance of existing sites. Open
space money should go more towards the maintenance than more projects
and "improvements".
Off leash areas (meadows, trails, etc).
Recreation, particularly unstructured recreation.
Parks, native landscapes, areas with geological features too.
Creeks opened up and restored.
Wetlands.
We are stewards of the parks and must care and preserve them.
No dog parks too. Designate as such. Educate people about them.
Close trails temporarily if necessary to protect wildlife and plants.
C. Facility
More multi purpose spaces.
Improved indoor and outdoor facilities for programmed activities
in arts and sciences.
Defined areas for dogs as well as areas compatible for off leash
dogs and other activities.
Upgrade buildings to meet current ADA and tilbe (?) 24 standards.
Parks so safe kids can go to alone and be safe.
Fun, imaginative playgrounds to satisfy older kids- above 7 yrs.
Family oriented- bathrooms, gathering places.
Key words- play structures, drinking, information, and picnic tables.
Dolores park: establish dog play area according to the dog policy.
Improve playground and clubhouse.
Consider addition of café.
Interpretative signage, picnic tables, lighting, bathroom facilities
at state St. playground- open bathroom at corona heights.
Currently, there are seemingly adequate facilities at Christopher,
however I have yet to see use made overtime of available facilities.
Toilets are locked, clubhouse is closed and unstaffed. Children are
few and sporadic in use. The field is little used, particularly during
summer months.
Glen Park has a terribly run down facility used for day care. An
updated facility I really needed.
Christopher Park has retaining walls and stirs going down into glen
park canyon that needs lot of help- more picnic tables would be useful.
Retaining wall of Christopher Playground/ Park on stairs going down
into Glen canyon.
Restroom/ facility/ clubhouse at upper Douglas and now courts.
Better signage, info kiosks outside, bathrooms.
Educational interpretative signage- flora, fauna, geology etc.
Clean , open restrooms everywhere.
Well maintained, well identified, welcoming facilities.
More places like the Randall museum and Sharon studio.
Environmental education citywide.
Hiking programs throughout, rotating through city.
Collaborative use with Randall museum and Sharon studios.
Photo center to do programs throughout the city.
D. Citywide
Continue to improve the Randall museum as a citywide children’s
museum and recreation center/ art and science center.
Natural areas- undeveloped original landscapes.
Lots of families (new) needing/ wanting to go places.
Spaces/ parks that connect with other neighborhood parks- walk/ fly
ways.
Consider adding concessions that would serve hikes, bird watchers,
playground users, and museum visitors.
Small, but pleasant and adequate for those who wish to explore the
city.
Retaining walls at Moffit open space and Fairmont plaza.
Randall museum.
Dolores park in general.
Glen park trails.
E. Other Comments
Parks that are multi purpose so that they are not dependant on rec.
directors but especially places to go to play as family- safe from off
leash dogs, off street illicit use.
Toilets in above areas need immediate consideration.
Workshop 2
Needs
Open space money should be used to maintain, repair, and improve
existing open spaces as they are, not as "natural areas" or
"SNA".
Recreational structures should be given priority.
Finish the dog run at Corona Heights (new grass, redo irrigation,
trees etc.) before redoing tennis courts etc.
More balance needed between open space for preservation and for recreation:
most of these are SNA!
None of the parks should be closed to public.
Unable to comment on priorities without more specific information
as to definitions + plan for each.
Kite hill- definition of "transfer in" and "right
of way".
Planning of all facilities and parks on or next to Corona heights-
with co-ordination of timing.
To include: Randall museum and grounds State St PG, Peixotto PG and
Clubhouse at Corona Heights.
Randall Museum- upgrade building to meet ADA and title 24 codes
and standards.
Restore natural areas in Corona heights- stabilize hillside, improve
trails, restore wetlands, and upgrade fencing.
The criteria for deciding which park get done first was arbitrary
and Glen Park was last. Some part of every parks should get done. We
otherwise will wit another 10 years before any improvements get done.
Mission Dolores Park: establish a dog play area, playground renovation,
clubhouse renovation, and reforestation.
Small rec. areas- Eureka, Noe, Douglas, Christopher.
Playgrounds, play areas.
Greenways + connections between areas.
Dist. Wide look at locations of dog areas and if where more might
be appropriate without every property being dog usage- on or off leash-
some place no dog.
Fix trails on Corona Heights, put in interpretative signage.
Upgrade museum facility and animal exhibit, full ADA access.
Fix State St. playground sooner- 4 school groups use it everyday,
open the bathroom.
Secure area behind the Randall museum from rockslides. Fencing is
horrible- restore natural areas.
Fix dog runs! Don’t put dog runs everywhere.
Priorities
The dept. should improve exiting open spaces as are- open areas:
not natural areas or SNA.
Retaining walls, path improvements, additional landscaping, brush
clearing, weed abatement, tree work where needed, reforestation water
way renovation.
Repair of restrooms at upper Douglas, Noe courts.
Glen Park Canyon LNA needs to be moved last on the list.
My number 1 priority is that any and all reforestation LNA projects
NOT close areas of Glen Park to the public.
Trails in the Glen Canyon Park should be maintained on a regular
basis.
Operating toilets!
Kite hill has designation of "open space" neighbors maintain
area by cutting weeds, etc.
All of the parks and facilities in or next to Corona Heights are
citywide resources. Work in Randall needs to continue to next phase(building
exterior and interior) while surrounding facilities and parks need much
more maintenance and upgrading.
The Randall museum serves the entire city from tots to seniors-
the facilities must be upgraded.
Corona Heights is a valuable natural area that should be improved
to provide habitat to wildlife.
Protect as many natural areas as possible, areas that would allow
connections from one place to another for people and wildlife.
Kids should be able to walk to a playground.
Priorities are- parcel 4 dune restoration, St. Mary’s park,
SF Conservatory building, Yerba Buena Island, Edge Hill mountain Phase
I and II, Balboa reservoir, Brotherhood way, Hawk Hill.
Glen Park since it is a Regional Park needs a master plan. We need
to separate out the park into different phases since the playground
can be done before the rec. center and the natural areas.
The dog play areas must be established so we can continue efforts
towards the playground and clubhouse renovation projects. Reforestation
can happen now.
For dist. and overall: dog issues settled, design process begun
+ drawings started, playgrounds and play areas fixed or installed, natural
areas protected, rec. centers built/ fixed, fields- ongoing.
Support natural areas.
Priorities: parcel 4 dune restoration, Francisco street park, St.
Mary’s park, Yerba Buena island, Balboa reservoir, Edge hill mountain,
hawk hill, Laguna Honda E-W, Rolph Nicol, Kite hill (right of way),
India basin and McLaren Park Willows.
Balboa reservoir- city college- car parking or park?
Continue work on the Randall Museum- don’t stop now- much
more needs to be done- it is a great citywide facility!
Clean, safe, accessible and welcoming facilities.
More no dog areas- we only have the tea garden and arboretum: if
we don’t want to be around dogs.
