In horticultural terms, NPC's initiatives are the growing tips of our organization: areas of our work that are in the development stage. These are areas of our work that need financial and other support in order for them to become fully established.
NPC welcomes your support and involvement in assisting us in these initiatives:
BLUE GREENWAY
The Blue Greenway is much more than a trail.
Through the Blue Greenway Initiative, Neighborhood Parks Council seeks to create a “green” corridor for activity and discovery along the Southeast shore of San Francisco. The Blue Greenway trail, while connecting the existing parks from McCovey Park to Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, will fulfill San Francisco’s Southeastern portion of the larger, Association of Bay Area Government (ABAG)-sponsored Bay Trail project.
The Blue Greenway trail will provide a much-needed alternative transportation opportunity that is easily accessible for exercise, recreation and enjoyment of public art and open space in the City’s park-poor Southeastern Corridor. It is our hope that the Blue Greenway will transform our southern waterfront in the same way that Chrissy Field has done for the Marina, and that it will rival Chrissy Field in its accessibility and wide-ranging appeal.

PLAYGROUND INITIATIVE
Building on the accomplishments of our Playground Campaign initiated in 2002 that successfully completed renovations of a number of pilot playground projects, NPC has launched a citywide Playground Initiative. This playground initiative will focus on upgrading failed playgrounds identified through our 2006 NPC Playground Report Card, to ensure that children can play and exercise safely outside, especially in lower-income neighborhoods where park space is the only outdoor play space. OPEN SPACE SAN FRANCISCO: 21OO
Open Space 2100 is an initiative to develop a community based open space vision, plan, and policies for San Francisco. This initiative will complement San Francisco's predicted growth and density by promoting an exceptional quality of urban life and a healthy lifestyle. A successful initiative will both improve the environment and strengthen our communities. Open Space 2100 will guide and inform decision-making about open space acquisition, development, funding, and management. It will ensure that open space continues to enhance the environmental, social, and economic well-being of our city.In addition to a Mayor's Task Force on Open Space, Open Space 2100 will engage the general public in planning the green vision though city-wide public forums, neighborhood-level planning sessions, and a green lecture series. Our goal is to create a community driven open space plan.
