Park Patrol Plays a Vital Role in Park Stewardship

The San Francisco Park Patrol, or Park Rangers, has been in existence since 1874, when the city’s first Superintendent of Parks, William Hammond Hall, founded the Park Guard, a special security unit that was meant to supplement the services of the regular city police.

Today, about 20 Patrol Officers are responsible for 230 park facilities and approximately 3,400 acres of public land. Their rounds include neighborhood parks, playgrounds, recreation centers, playfields, natural areas, tennis courts, golf courses, park stadiums and administrative park offices. Their duties and responsibilities include patrolling park areas, enforcing park codes, assisting in crime intervention, aiding emergency service personnel, and monitoring park wildlife.
