Soccer Skills Competition Brings Out Neighborhood Youth
On Sunday, November 15, 2009, volunteers and neighborhood youth came to Garfield Square to enjoy a fun afternoon of soccer in the park. Eddie Williams, a parent of a youth soccer player (and December’s Volunteer of the Month, helped organize the event in partnership with the Neighborhood Parks Council. Both Eddie and other volunteers helped run the skills competition, and provided snacks and refreshments for the youth as they worked up a sweat!

Eddie is excited to gather more folks to his park group organizing efforts, and hopes to see more events like the soccer skills competition in the future. He remarked on how great it is that the community can enjoy a new field like Garfield’s, due to the efforts of City Fields Foundation, the Recreation and Park Department, and NPC. He sees his efforts, and those of the community, as a way of giving back.

NOVEMBER 2009:
Events at South Sunset Playground and Silver Terrace Bring Out Families
Warm sun set the tone for what were two great community events at Silver Terrace and South Sunset Playground. On October 17th, about 100 people turned out for the second annual Silver Terrace Harvest Festival, including many excited children. Attendees enjoyed free food and refreshments, including delicious pot stickers donated by San Bruno Café. There were plenty of activities for children and raffle items up for grabs. Attendance was up big from last year, signaling increased interest in the park group, and superb outreach by the Friends of Silver Terrace. Each member committed to bring five friends, and they sure did! See photos from the Harvest Festival here .
At South Sunset, families gathered on Saturday, October 24th for a Halloween Party at the park. Pumpkins were donated by Sloat Garden Center and snacks provided by Trader Joe’s. Children decorated their pumpkins with parents and family members, and took breaks from their artwork to run around the playground. Some came in costume, and all enjoyed a sunny afternoon in the park. Visit our Flickr page here for photos of the Halloween Party.
OCTOBER 2009:
Join NPC at a playfield event this fall!
It’s going to be a busy fall season this year for the Playfields Stewardship Initiative. No fewer than five events are being planned—we invite you to join us! See below for information and dates.
1. Jewish Community Center Carnival at Kimbell Park
To jumpstart JCC’s stewardship efforts at Kimbell Park, the JCC is hosting a community carnival on October 4th from 1-4pm. This carnival will also be a celebration of the Jewish holiday Sukkot. For more information, click here. (Kimbell Park is located at Geary and Steiner Streets--click here for a map.)
2. Second Annual Silver Terrace Harvest Festival
For the second time, the Friends of Silver Terrace will be hosting a Harvest Festival at Silver Terrace Park. The event will include pumpkin decorating and other arts and crafts activities, free food and a free raffle. The event will be held on October 17th from 12-3pm. (Silver Terrace Park is located at 1700 Silver Avenue--click here for a map.)
3. South Sunset Halloween Event
Building off the success of the South Sunset Café event (see photos here), the Friends of South Sunset Playground are hosting a fun Halloween-themed event on October 24th from 2-4pm. Similar to the Harvest Festival, this event would include a pumpkin-decorating activity, as well as free refreshments for attendees. (South Sunset Playground is located at 40th Avenue and Vicente--click here for a map.)
4. Franklin Square Field Day
Tentatively scheduled for early November, this event would include a soccer skills competition, free refreshments for attendees and other fun activities for children and families.
5. Garfield Square Soccer Skills Competition
Also to be held in early to mid-November, this event would similarly include a skills competition as well as prizes for participants and free food from local merchants.
