Weeds cleared, sleeves rolled up, and the sun shining, parents and grandparents of the Silver Terrace neighborhood prepared to plant some new life into a small garden plot at the Waterville Street entrance to Silver Terrace Park. Having completed the major work of removing a nasty old stump from the plot last month, volunteers now took on the much more enjoyable (and less back-breaking) work of planting beautiful flowers and plants. Splashes of yellow, maroon, purple and white soon adorned the once weed-ridden area.
Participants of the garden project got a chance to reconnect with their environment through the simple act of planting a flower. Some learned lessons that they'll apply to their own gardens at home. Others enjoyed having the time to experience something new with their children or grandchildren. Everyone got to know each other and enjoy the warm weather. Next month, the families will come back to create signs that will encourage other neighbors to care for the new flowerbed and hopefully deter vandals who would potentially steal flowers. The group hopes that through their efforts, they can grow community as well as flowers. Click here to see photos from the day's work.
