A Playground Initiative workday at Silver Terrace was completed on Saturday, October 25th. Approximately, 20 volunteers joined RPD Gardener Marquiza Turner, Marianne Kjobmand from RPD’s Volunteer Program, and NPC Program Assistant Sunya Ojure and NPC Outreach Coordinator Matt Silva for sand sifting, weeding, and trash pickup.
Volunteers were rewarded with snacks donated by the Geary and Webster Safeway as well as by the satisfying sight of large piles of weeds and trash, which they removed from the playground. Thanks to all who joined together to make Silver Terrace Playground cleaner and safer! See photos here .

Silver Terrace Harvest Festival
Also on October 25th, the Friends of Silver Terrace hosted a Harvest Festival at the park. Following the playground workday earlier that morning, the Harvest Festival provided food and fun activities for children. Portola Family Connections offered arts and crafts activities, while Shelley Sorensen from the Portola Branch Library came by to do a scary story reading. The Garden Project generously donated 40 pumpkins for children to paint, as well as many bags of organic produce and native strawberry plants for community members to take home. Honest Tea and Safeway provided refreshments, and the Portola Community Convener, Nelly Quintanilla, donated sandwiches. The City Fields Foundation provided prizes for a free raffle.
The event was an excellent opportunity for both new and veteran community members to get to know Silver Terrace Park. Since City Fields Foundation completed renovations to the playfield, both it and the park have sported a brand-new look that is being recognized by community members. Walkers particularly enjoy taking a stroll along the park’s walking path, and passers-by took advantage of the festival’s many free offerings. The Friends of Silver Terrace plan on hosting additional events in the coming months, and have posted a survey online to gather feedback on what the community would like to see at a Holiday Event (the survey can be found at www.sfnpc.org/silverterracesurvey ).
