NPC knows that active community participation in our parks’ activities spurs public commitment to this vital component of our urban environment. Knowledge of the environment through local activities helps to build global environmental stewardship. Working together to support our parks strengthens communities, promotes physical and mental health, encourages a strong economy, and augments limited city resources.
NPC galvanizes public concern for our local green spaces and parks by organizing park stewardship groups throughout San Francisco. We currently work with more than 120 of these groups; our goal is to have a “Friends of” group for every one of the 220 neighborhood parks in San Francisco.
As a service to our park groups and coalition members, NPC provides step-by-step information about how to get started and how to keep their neighbors engaged; we serve as a fiscal sponsor for their fundraising efforts; and we provide a voice at City Hall to promote their individual efforts as well as our collective effort to improve parks in San Francisco.
In addition, NPC hosts monthly coalition meetings featuring guest speakers and panelists to provide a forum for sharing information and experience among the groups. We also offer technical assistance to members through one-on-one counseling and member materials, and through educational presentations and workshops.
