After more than five years of community planning and fundraising, the grand opening of Rossi Playground took place on Sunday, May 20th at 1 PM. The Friends of Rossi Playground, with the help of NPC, has done an amazing job of stewarding this project, and it would have never happened without their leadership and hard work!
The new playground features a colorful mosaic throne with a butterfly motif, designed by artist Sarah Dorrance (click here to see more of Sarah’s work), and built by Luis Hernandez. The throne is called “Mission Blue”, named for a local endangered butterfly. The piece was commissioned by Richmond resident Cherie Golant, and is dedicated to the memory of her stillborn daughter, Julia. Cherie chose the butterfly as a beautiful symbol of her daughter’s short life.
Another special feature is the brick donor circle, listing names of the community members who donated money to the renovation.
All are welcome to visit the new playground. The playground is located at Arguello Boulevard and Anza Street—click here for a map.
