Callen Taylor of the Friends of Kimbell Playground has been chosen as NPC’s Volunteer of the Month for February. Callen has worked hard to get a park group started at Kimball, and the group is fast on their way towards making some major improvements!
What inspired you to work in your community to improve the parks and playgrounds?
The Western Addition does not have many clean or updated parks for children. Many are dirty and not necessarily safe for families. I saw this as an issue about equity. This is a neighborhood that serves low and middle class families and they should have access to nice parks and not have to travel to Duboce Triangle or Pac Heights to find them. Plus I have two kids that use Kimball almost daily.
What are your hopes for the future of Kimball Playground?
I would like to see the bathrooms cleaned up, the playground fixed up, dogs off the field and into a dog run area, the field fixed, the meadow used to its potential and maybe a garden!
