The Friends of West Sunset Playground (FOWSP) have begun a campaign to raise enough money to rebuild the West Sunset Playground. The group recently received two seed grants, one from PG&E and one from AT&T. However, they still have $1,000s to go before they can see their dream of a new playground realized. NPC is excited that the Friends are so dedicated to rebuilding the playground and have been busy trying to keep the current playground as safe as possible for area children by hosting a number of playground workdays.
On Saturday June 28th, community members gathered at West Sunset Playground (located at 3223 Ortega Street) to clean up one of the few play areas in the Sunset neighborhood. The workday marked the beginning of collaborative efforts between the Friends of West Sunset Playground, NPC, and RPD to raise the grade of the failing playground, and to give the children in the Outer Sunset a safe place to play. Special thanks to all the volunteers who attended, including Supervisor Carmen Chu, who helped pick up trash and debris. To see photos from the day, click here.

On Thursday, October 2nd the Friends continued their fundraising efforts by hosting the Sunset Soiree at City Hall. Over 100 guests joined the FOWSP and NPC for an evening of fine food and great company.
Volunteers once again joined together at West Sunset for a playground cleanup on October 18th, 2008. This workday was a part of the larger event Dig It! which was a 400-person volunteer greening event. While volunteers picked up trash and sifted sand at West Sunset Playground, hundreds of additional volunteers planted street trees and conducted park, playground, street and schoolyard cleanups all around the Outer Sunset District. Dig It! was a great example of how a neighborhood playground project can be an integral part of a larger greening effort.
